Joseph Di Benedetto

Architect

There are moments in one’s education that resonate. For architect Joseph Di Benedetto, who recently joined Hindley & Co, some of the most important influences on his architecture career have come from his lecturers and tutors at Deakin University where he studied. A summer school held by eminent architects Richard Leplastrier and Peter Sutchbury, also showed Joseph the importance of context and place – the ability to observe a place and what it means in terms of the built and the natural environment.

Joseph graduated from Deakin University with a Masters of Architecture in 2018, with the first seeds sewn to pursue this profession in Year 9 at high school – studying graphics and drafting that allowed him to fully embrace his love of drawing and essentially ‘putting things together’. Under the guidance of his university mentors such as Des Smith, Scott Eldridge and James Coulsen, this talent formed the ‘tectonics’ of architecture.

Since graduating from architecture, Joseph has steered towards working with smaller practices, having the ability to work closely with a team as well as having a stronger connection and role with clients - building relationships and essentially what Joseph refers to as ‘solving problems.’ For four years, Joseph worked with Cornetta Partners Architects, working on domestic projects in the northern corridor of Melbourne – from Northcote through to Preston. Given Joseph grew up in the northern suburbs, it was a ‘patch’ that came with familiarity. And from smaller to larger projects, Joseph then spent time working with Addarc, overseeing nine apartments in the bayside suburb of Hampton.

Given his preference for working with smaller practices, known for their bespoke work, Joseph joined Hindley & Co – drawn to its talented and enthusiastic team of architects and creatives and allowing for the type of collaboration that produces the best outcomes for the client. At Hindley & Co, there’s the opportunity to be part of the entire design process – from the initial client briefing through to the concept and the construction stages. As with his former experience, the strength comes down to team work and delivering well beyond the client’s expectations.
