“This is the third time we have appointed Hindley & Co. We’ve worked with other architects in the past but found Anne to be particularly good at really listening to our needs, and then translating what she hears into architecture and interiors that are unexpected – richer, and more meaningful and inspirited than we’d hoped for.”

- Jo and Eric, owners, Albert Park

Albert Park House is a dramatic and moody renovation of an original 1900s heritage-listed Victorian terrace in Albert Park. The Victorian bones of the house had some elegant features, but recent renovations had rendered the home utilitarian and plain. Our intention was to breathe renewed energy into the house and gardens collectively,  bringing back the character and soul of this beautiful heritage home.

Prior to renovating, the home’s rear living and kitchen area looked onto a dreary courtyard and garage studio, and the improvement of this outlook was central to the design intent and has proven to be integral to the success of the renovation. Our approach sought to harmonise the relationship between the house, studio and garden, for the mutual benefit of each space. We achieved the desired cohesion and harmony by employing elementary techniques to declutter and simplify the previously fragmented layout.

Additionally by focusing on creating clear sightlines through the interiors and framing the views of the verdant courtyard gardens designed by Kate Seddon, we brought nature inside, giving the house a feeling of openness and serene calm that our client was seeking.

This thoughtful reimagining and reconfiguring of  the gardens, combined with giving the pool and outdoor entertaining area a radical face-lifting, enabled the external spaces to flow freely into one another, all while connecting seamlessly with the house and vice-versa.
